What an honor to be featured in Guideposts. It’s something my Mom and Dad always read to me to inspire that anything is possible.

My experience in Haiti during the earthquake changed my life. It changed my perspective on everything. I made a promise to my Haitian friend and Principal Milo Francious. After walking 10 miles to come see the group, he said he had lost everything, family, house, school, but not his faith. He looked me straight in the eye and said, “My sister, my sister, don’t forget me, don’t forget the people of Haiti.”

I saw God’s miracles first hand – and how much He truly loves each and every one of us and I vow to continue to keep that promise.

One person can make a difference. You can make a difference. That’s right YOU. I hope my story in Guideposts Magazine touched your heart. Now, YOU have the chance to make a difference in so many people’s lives.

I want to encourage you to take part in the Shoebox drive. Grab a shoebox and fill it with items. I want to challenge you to gather a group and spread the word. Haiti needs you. Tell your family, tell your friends, neighbors and those at Church and school. This is something so simple each of us can do to help those in Haiti restore their hope and rebuild their lives. Each of us can make a difference. I hope you’ll join me in collecting shoeboxes. God is so Awesome!

Let’s shine His light and make a difference to those who need it most now! Jesus says in Matthew 25:40 “Whatever you did for one of the least of my brothers you did for me.” Do something for Jesus. Pack a shoebox. Pray for the people in Haiti. You can make a difference. And from the bottom of my heart I thank you!

Foundation Academy Students Collect Shoeboxes

With the history earthquake on January 12, 2010, students have come together to collect shoeboxes for Haiti.

On Wednesday, March 3, the Foundation Academy in Winter Garden, Florida, kicked off their Haiti shoebox drive by collecting 80 shoeboxes during their chapel service. These gifts are uniquely prepared for post-earthquake needs impacting lives of children in Haiti.

More than ever, children and their families in Haiti need our support and help. This is a great way to give something tangible that will make a big difference.

Volunteers Serving

Today, volunteers served at the Shoebox Drive processing center. We welcomed people from three churches: Northland Church in Longwood, First Baptist Winter Garden, and Grace Point Church in Orlando. Richelle and Marissa, from Daytona State College drove in with 72 shoeboxes they collected.

As of today, Saturday, November 7th, we have collected 2,036 shoeboxes already packed on 9 pallets. Our goal is 10,000 shoeboxes and we are very thankful for this strong start to this year's Christmas Shoebox Drive, Nov 1 - Dec 18th.

Fewer than 700 miles off the coast of Florida is the poorest country in the western hemisphere—Haiti. In 1804, the West African slaves revolted against the French, dedicated their country to Satan and became the first Black Republic. Today, more than 8.5 million people call Haiti home. Over 2 million children do not attend school. Haiti is too close to ignore, and it is our calling to develop a generation of Christian leaders in Haiti. Haiti is a third world country with very little natural resources and a population where 47% of the adults are illiterate. Voodoo is the primary religion practiced in Haiti. We are reaching the people of Haiti with the power of the Gospel by establishing churches and providing Christian education, medical care, necessary food and community development. Our work in Haiti is focused on reaching the poorest of the poor.

Math Teacher Multiplies Shoeboxes

Math teacher Sandy Mathews turned her passion for packing Christmas shoeboxes into an opportunity for students to put their school’s mission statement (...character before career; wisdom beyond scholarship, service before self, and participation as a way of life) into practice.

A LaCrosse, Wisconsin native, Mathews has been teaching for 18 years. For the past seven years, she has been teaching at The First Academy (TFA) in Orlando where she is now head of the Upper School Math Department and primarily teaches Algebra II and Pre-Calculus to 10th through 12th graders.

“In years past, TFA has encouraged the students to participate in the Christmas shoebox effort. It’s something everyone can participate in, and becomes a competition among grade levels,” said Mathews. When asked which grade usually wins, Mathews chuckles and says, “My students generally win every year. I am known at TFA for my enthusiasm with the Christmas shoeboxes.”

Usually the shoebox effort kicks into high gear in the fall and tops out with a packing party in November. However, Mathews is in high gear all year long, constantly buying shoebox items on clearance and raising money in her classroom.

“My cupboards at school are full,” says Mathews. “I buy things when I see them on sale. Recently, I saw wash cloths on clearance, and after Christmas I found socks and jump ropes for a quarter.”

Mathews gets creative in the classroom too, offering incentives to students to help reimburse herself for the items she buys throughout the year. She may sell candy or cupcakes for a quarter or fifty cents and allow the students to eat in class that day. Some students donate items for the shoeboxes while others choose to donate the cost of shipping several boxes.

“The participation comes in a variety of ways,” said Mathews. “When they see my enthusiasm and what I have stored in my cupboards, the students get enthused, too.”

That enthusiasm recently translated into the “off season” when several TFA students volunteered to help Mathews assemble nearly 200 shoeboxes on Good Friday. There was a great energy as the students arrived by 10:00 am (on their day off from school) to help assemble shoeboxes. The donated items were organized in the classroom: calculators, clothing, essential hygiene items, etc. The passion was contagious! The local Christian radio station, Z88.3 FM, was playing in the background and there was an excitement in the room. After the shoeboxes were packed, the students loaded them into cases and drove them to the New Missions office in Orlando. –Terri Starcher, Contributing Writer

NEW MISSIONS LAUNCHES CHRISTMAS SHOEBOX DRIVE

Orlando, Fla. (April 30, 2009) – Orlando-based ministry New Missions announces the launch of its 2009 Christmas Shoebox Drive, which will impact the lives of children in Haiti—the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. New Missions has more than 9,000 Haitian students from pre-school to high school enrolled in its 21 schools. Individuals, churches, businesses and schools can participate by hosting collection drives between May and November when the boxes will be packed for shipment to Haiti. New Missions has a dedicated shoebox drive website at www.shoeboxdrive.com where promotional campaign posters, displays and church bulletin inserts are available at no cost.

“Last year was our first Christmas shoebox drive and we collected an impressive 4,000 shoeboxes,” said New Missions President Tim DeTellis. “This year we are maximizing social networking with a Facebook fan page for the shoebox drive along with videos posted on YouTube using search term ‘Christmas shoebox drive’ and a special Twitter account.”

New Missions, headquartered in Orlando, Fla., is one of the largest mission organizations working in Haiti. With more than 9,000 students in school from pre-school through high school and over 300 full-time Haitian staff, New Missions is one of the largest employers in Leogane, where its mission is located. New Missions has worked in Haiti since 1983 where it currently provides education, medical care, food, and has established 20 churches across the Leogane Plain. New Missions also serves the North Coast of the Dominican Republic in Sosua.
